Plague Cult The Collegium Book 5 edition by Jenny Schwartz Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

Ruth and Shawn are independent, brilliant at what they do, she a healer and he a guardian and have one very important thing in common – acute loneliness. They’re meant to help the mundane (human) town on Bideer, Texas, (Ruth’s birthplace) by dispelling evil before a magical plague is released on the population. Dealing with the cult-like behaviour of some of the town’s inhabitants is one thing, but facing the distrust and isolation by Ruth’s family is another matter entirely. And if they’re to learn anything about the Lonely Hearts Club and save her hometown, Ruth has to deal with her family first, the plague second, and her own lonely heart a very distant third.

This story contained characters of equal strength and ability who were ready to sacrifice everything to keep the other safe – my favourite kind. ) I love how this story helped heal Ruth and Shawn’s hurts – it’s amazing what a bit of communication can do – and gave them the strength they needed to fight the evil magic surrounding them. Oh and Carla – the ghost – I have a feeling her involvement is going to be instrumental in another book. I’ll have to wait and see if I’m right.
A healer and a Huntsman - and no, it wasn't Chris Hemsworth, either, though Shawn does make you think of the archaic, Norse warrior type! - but who better to defeat a magical plague of epidemic proportions?
This book mixes everything I love about rural, small-town romance, along with the paranormal elements in the rest of the Collegium series, with the added twist of a newly-formed cult just out of town. Plenty of action and a ghost with a surprising secret that I know I never saw coming...making this my latest five-star read. Yep. Five stars.
The playful banter and simmering chemistry between Ruth and Shawn grabbed me. I enjoyed their camaraderie/friendship throughout the story. Their characters were a good pairing. Ruth and Shawn's characters I just wanted to keep reading about. The story held my attention and the characters captivated me. Ruth and Shawn's attraction, challenges and twists within the story all made for a great read. The story ended abruptly, but it was a story that I didn't want to finish as the two main characters were captivating )
Review copy received from the author for an honest rating
I really enjoy this series' worldbuilding and characters, both of which are just a little different from the average offering. This particular book revolves around a biological plague created by a curse and fueled by negative human emotions. The two people sent to prevent the plague from sending the world spinning into chaos are a highly empathic healer and terror-inducing huntsman.

In addition to enjoying the setup, I was also glad to see that (after book two) each story in this series can be read as a standalone since it follows a different couple. That decision on the author's part plus the focus on the relationship between the two main characters gives this book a flavor of paranormal romance...but with urban-fantasy worldbuilding taking the places of excessive sex scenes. A much better sauce, in my opinion.
Ruth and Shawn have a mission... figure out who is behind a curse that could start a plague. There is a bit of mystery, a lot of magic, and some romance between the hero and heroine. The pacing was good, and there was definitely a feeling of tension as they raced against the clock. I appreciate that Ruth is not all powerful, and that the duo work together to stop the plague and the one who is responsible. This book can be read as a standalone (I have read some books in this series and have read them out of order and still enjoyed them). It has a happy ending.
I enjoyed reading this paranormal, haunting romance novel. It was a clean read, the most is kissing, and part of a series that can be read stand alone. Safe read. The author really does a good job of building the story up until the final scene.
Story centers on fears a plague has originated and can be unleashed from the hometown of one of the members of the Collegium (I think about it like FBI/CIA of magic). A body was found with this plague magic radiating from it and the Collegium needs to send in an investigation team to solve it before it is unleashed on the public. (Think Ebola.)
The story begins with the hero and heroine being introduced to each other and the mission they are both being partnered to help solve. They are professionals with their own secrets and wounds, which the heroine suspects later is another reason her boss matched them. She suspects he wants them to help each other heal. (I think he may have been trying to play matchmaker ;)
Anyway, heroine has to go back home where the plague may be harvested and the hero is going with her under the disguise of him doing construction on her newly purchased house (which he actually does do construction), but his primary duty is to guard the heroine and lead the investigator to solving the mystery. We soon realize heroine dreads going back home because of some family issues that have made her feel like she failed her family and given her years of guilt to live with. She struggles to feel like she belongs. Hero picks up on this and notable upset by it. He would understand better than anyone as he also struggles to feel like he belongs as he has a power that is strong and many fear being around him because of it. It is the stuff of folktales. Even heroine is cautions when he first reveals his powers.
However, those same powers make him perfect partner for the mission as he can disguise his powers, sense out evil and is very powerful in his ability to kill evil. Heroine on the other hand is the opposite. She is a healer that can heal with touch alone and diagnose by reading someone’s aura. She is shy, quiet, and thoughtful. True introvert. Heroine soon feels in-depth to hero as he helps her with her family issues, which helps her build on the trust between them. Which hero does not easily give out.
So this unlikely pair start out as two colleges, with heroine showing more awareness of how hot hero is but having such a low self-esteem doesn't believe anything will come of it, but soon develop into a friendship. Things take a turn when hero combines his powers with her and then soon they realize a strong attraction they may not have been fully conscious of before.
But when you think that is all, suddenly another mystery is thrown in! The twist and turns just keep moving right along in this book. You now have to add in a friendly ghost that lives in the home, with her own mission into the mix. This ghost also plays a part in helping with the mystery. Plus, the suspiciousness of a couple and strangers that moved into the small town for what many believe is the start of a cult. Can this cult be the center of this problem? That is something the H/h need to find out.

So you get plenty of twist and turns as they move forward in their investigation. They also have to navigate through their feelings for each other. I felt there were several turning points in the story with the final one that covered all the loose ends from the mission the couple was given. But wait, the friendly ghost now has peace as she imparts something important she felt could have helped them in their mission but the couple soon realize it is meant for something bigger than what they faced. So we end with what could be next story in the series, as couple go off to the sunset and are now free to express their love.'

I follow the series and read it in my KU.
Even if read out of turn. Good characters with a nice story I plan to read much more of this
